Evolution of the Black Quarterback, from SMAC Productions, is a three-part docuseries on Prime Video, hosted by legendary Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick, and takes viewers on a journey through the history, challenges, and triumphs of Black quarterbacks in the NFL. As someone who has played football and been a fan of the NFL since I was a kid, this series struck a chord with me.
The docuseries honors the past while celebrating the present and future. Featuring interviews with some of the most iconic Black quarterbacks—including Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, and legends like Doug Williams and Warren Moon—this series gives a voice to the pioneers who broke barriers and paved the way for today’s stars. The insights and commentary from figures like Deion Sanders, Common, and Steve Young offer even more depth and dimension.

It’s also impossible not to feel the impact of recent history, as the docuseries leads up to the monumental 2023 NFL Draft, where three Black quarterbacks were selected within the top four picks, Byce Young taken number 1, CJ Stroud taken number 2, and Anthony Richardson taken number 4, something unimaginable in decades past. The docuseries’ focus of the evolution of this position is not just about football, but about breaking through societal and racial barriers.
Michael Vick’s journey across America exploring the legacy of Black quarterbacks allows viewers to connect not just to the sport, but to the people who have changed it forever.
SMAC Productions, with NFL Films and Fubo Studios, has crafted a piece that goes beyond just sports. Evolution of the Black Quarterback is more than a documentary; it’s a celebration of courage, talent, and the pursuit of greatness.
