Expecting Excellence In Cyberpunk 2077 – What This Fan Wants From…Cyberpunk 2077

Welcome to another week of sometimes unrealistic fanboy expectations. This week I’m talking about expecting excellence in Cyberpunk 2077. Maybe then, this week my expectations might not be so unrealistic? If you don’t know what Cyberpunk 2077 is, then it’s an upcoming RPG game from CDPR. Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be optimized for next-gen as well, and like many games, the transfer to next-gen will be free of charge for owners of the game. The hype for Cyberpunk 2077 is largely down to the reputation of CDPR. CDPR has garnered great respect among its peers and the fan base. You may have heard of a little multi-award winning game called The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt? Well, that was also CDPR and it was one of the greatest games I have ever played.

So, both among the fan base and myself, the hype for Cyberpunk 2077 is very real. I often lower my expectations for games, because, well, usually they are released in a semi-finished state. Most games I enjoy didn’t start getting good until they had been out a while already. CDPR doesn’t do that, and in fact, the game has been delayed twice already due to simply not being ready. CDPR has always been adamant that the game will come out when it’s ready and not before. Well, it’s coming, on November 19th. I have to admit, that I might not purchase on release. I want to experience this game in the best possible way, and that for me means waiting for the release of the Xbox Series X.

So, let’s get into what kind of things I’m hoping to see from Cyberpunk 2077

Lifepaths

This week saw a short video released by CDPR showing the three possible Lifepath’s a player can take in the game. Players have the choice to begin as a Street Kid, Nomad, or Corpo. The game takes place in the futuristic Night City, but a City that will hopefully feel both familiar and exotic. The whole hook of Cyberpunk 2077 is the way technology has fused with Humans. As the player, you will be able to upgrade your character throughout the game (it’s an RPG, duh) with new tech enhancements. Check the video below if you missed it the first time around.

It’s hard to say how engaging the gameplay itself will be, because so little of the game has been shown, and what has seems very different. But it is the story itself that I am intrigued by. The Witcher 3 had great gameplay don’t get me wrong, but the storytelling was what hooked me. Every time I as the player had a decision to make, I was drawn in, which RPGs don’t normally do for me. The world just felt real, along with the characters who inhabited it. And the story in The Witcher always took on surprising turns.

So with three different Lifepaths to choose at the start, CDPR is already giving me a tough choice. Which do I choose first? Will the story converge the same for all of them, or will they go in completely different directions? My hope and my belief in CDPR has my heart set on three completely different stories. Therefore to truly experience everything this game has to offer, you’d need to play it three times, and each time will feel as wonderful as the last. I did say up top I was expecting excellence here. So to have three different stories that somehow all link together into one big narrative is my dream. The icing on the cake will be how the decisions you make in one Lifepath, affect the game you experience in the other two.

Video Game Art

expecting excellence in Cyberpunk 2077

The Witcher 3, despite being an early game for the PS4 and Xbox One generation is gorgeous. To this day players are still marveling at some of the scenery and simple beauty of that open world. On fan forums for The Witcher games, fans still post amazing screenshots that just take the breath away. That’s not to mention the fans that have developed mods to increase the quality of the textures and patterns on PC. However, the world of Night City and Cyberpunk 2077 looks light-years beyond The Witcher 3. I am therefore expecting this to be a video game work of art.

I’m expecting a fully realized world, in 4K, with almost no loading times. That’s why I want to wait for Xbox Series X. The desire with a game like Cyberpunk, is that you immerse yourself fully in that world for a time. It’s the purest form of stress release from the hassles of the real world. That’s the hook for many gamers with RPG’s. Somehow though, I fail to get immersed fully in most titles I’ve tried? My hopes are that Cyberpunk 2077, is so well made a world, that I spend hours doing almost nothing to advance the story, and love it.

There are blockbuster movies and there are movies that are very much works of art. I guess when it comes to CDPR, I am expecting excellence from Cyberpunk 2077.

Excellent Expansions

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had two of the best game expansions I’ve ever played. Hearts of Stone, then Blood and Wine were like games within themselves. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a player who didn’t feel those expansions were value for money. I myself bought the Game of Year Edition of that game, therefore getting all the expansions for one price. Money well spent. So I do expect CDPR to have some expansion materials planned for Cyberpunk 2077. Whatever form those expansions take, I expect them to be value for money.

Of course, until I actually complete Cyberpunk, I won’t know what I truly want to see from an expansion to the game. However, if Cyberpunk is 80% the game I expect, then it will be a long while before I’m desperate for new content to play. The level of trust I have in CDPR as a game developer though means I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at immediately purchasing any expansion to Cyberpunk 2077 that eventually arrive. You won’t have any loot boxes to buy in a CDPR  game, and you won’t have to pay $10 for some horse armor. Of that, I am supremely confident, and I couldn’t say the same for any other game or developer. Again, you can see why expecting excellence from Cyberpunk 2077 is really so easy to do.

Wrap It Up, Fanboy

Yeah, I expect a lot from Cyberpunk 2077, but have a look online and you will find most fans have similar if not higher expectations than I do. That’s how you build a reputation and that reputation builds a rand and that drives sales. CDPR could bring out a game called ‘Garbage Truck Wars’ and I’d be immediately excited and intrigued. I suppose I have the same level of faith in CDPR as I do Marvel Studios. I don’t give faith freely, it has to be earned from me, and CDPR like Marvel studios had earned that faith.

Hopefully, now we just sit and wait for the glowing reviews to come in for Cyberpunk 2077. And for me, who will probably delay my gratification a little on Cyberpunk, it’s about staying away from any story spoilers.

Are you expecting excellence in Cyberpunk 2077? What do you want to see from Cyberpunk based on what you know about the game? Leave your thoughts in the usual spot below as always.
