Famke Janssen Not Reuniting With X-Men Co-Stars In Avengers: Doomsday?

With rumors strong already on this, it's now confirmed that the Avengers: Doomsday trailer will play in from of Avatar: Fire & Ash.

When Marvel Studios released their empty chairs video to announce the cast for Avengers: Doomsday, the reaction online was largely divided. Hardcore MCU fans were excited about many Fox-era actors reprising their X-Men characters. Others were left confused by the glaring omissions. While it’s expected that further cast announcements will come, one X-Men star stands firm about not returning to Marvel period.

Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the initial three X-Men installments, spoke to Entertainment Weekly while promoting Amsterdam Empire. When asked about potentially appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, Janssen, in her own way, says Marvel has “never ever” called her.

“Every time I do an interview, it’s mentioned. It’s interesting. I didn’t realize that was such a big part. Every interview I do, that will come up, and of everything I say, that is going to be the only thing that’s gonna be printed.”

“I should be flattered, I suppose, that this character has resonated with people. It’s been so long, but it’s nice that people are still talking about her. I’m sure every single time there’s a new movie that they’re doing, like [is it] Doomsday? It’ll come up again.”

Bringing Janssen’s all-powerful telepathic mutant into Doomsday would run some serious narrative risks. Jean Grey had a promising arc with her transformation into the Phoenix until X-Men: The Last Stand resolved it with a whimper. Her subsequent cameos in The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past were largely lackluster. Even Sophie Turner’s younger take in the X-Men: First Class films had less than desirable results. Jean’s story is much better served in Jake Schreier’s planned X-Men reboot.

Janssen’s comments come on the heels of Halle Berry telling Black Girl Nerds in April that she would not be reprising Storm. Additionally, Hugh Jackman has expressed a vague interest in bringing Wolverine into an already stuffed MCU ensemble. Of course, any denial of being in an MCU project must be taken with a grain of salt, given Marvel Studios’ track record for stars’ sworn secrecy.

For now, confirmed X-Men stars for Avengers: Doomsday include Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast. Robert Downey, Jr. headlines as Dr. Doom with Joe and Anthony Russo back in the director’s chair.
