The Avengers cut together like the Justice League Snyder Cut? Okay.
One of my favorite pastimes out there is to look at films cut to other trailer styles of other movies. For example, seeing Captain America: Civil War cut together in the same style as one of the Mission: Impossible – Fallout trailers. It gives us a chance to see other scenes from the films highlighted in new ways, and to see our favorite movies in a whole new light.
So, I was excited when a fan threw together an Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame trailer in the style of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Of course, that means we get a trailer that features Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” One would think that pretty much any film could look cool and serious with the song, but does it work with the Avengers? Well, I’m not so sure.

Now, first off, I’d like to point out that I love Avengers: Endgame. I think it’s practically perfect and wouldn’t change a damn second in it. So, don’t take this as me hating. But I don’t really think the filmmaking style of the Russo Brothers is as effective with this type of trailer as Zack Snyder’s is.
While the storytelling inherent in the Russo Brothers is fantastic, I can’t say that their strength is visuals. Their strengths are characters and emotion. As such, a trailer that is solely reliant on visuals simply doesn’t work. Their style of filmmaking is very much utilitarian. There are aspects that are beautiful and gorgeous, but most of it is filmmaking in service of the story.
Snyder, on the other hand, is a master visual storyteller. He likes to convey as much as possible through what’s on screen, not necessarily what’s being said. As such, the nearly-wordless trailer we got was about as effective as one could get, as it focused on his greatest strengths.
