The Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped yesterday and now it’s been seen by millions around the world, I’m seeing mixed fan reactions. Sources here are of course online only. I have no idea what your Uncle Phil thought when he watched it. I have however been following the online conversation across multiple social media platforms and I feel like the reactions are surprisngly mixed.

I’d say the range (if trash is 0 and perfection is 10), probably fall in the 1-8 range. That’s  a fairly wide range, but crucially I’m not seeing those 9’s or 10’s.

The worst reactions I’ve seen criticise it for looking like a cameo fest with a bunch of characters they don’t care about. The best reactions have been those theory crafting everything they’ve seen so far, (but the truth is there wasn’t a lot shown). Yet, the general feeling from all but the most harsh fans has been that they are excited to see this film come December 18th. I’m hearing domestically you’ll be struggling to find a ticket for Thursday night previews already.

Look, this trailer didn’t hurt the film, I’m not saying that at all. Fans get that there is desire to hide a lot of the film at this early stage and those that know who Doom are are excited just to see a glimpse of him. I am saying that I don’t think it did much to lift the hype meter like the first trailer for Spider-Man: BND did.

One factor could be the leaks for Doomsday have been bigger than for Brand New Day. Therefore, the crowd that follow leaks and rumors already know that to expect from this latest trailer. Additionally, they already know a lot of plot surprises in the narrative as well. Perhaps this dampened the excitement of some fans, perhaps it’s just a teaser trailer and we should just let it be?

Either way, I think the trailer launch was fairly lukewarm from a reactive standpoint. That won’t prevent it from being watched by everyone on Earth and I doubt it’ll turn fans away from seeing it in December.

For myself, I thought it was okay. I think it didn’t quite live up to the description I shared here (in some ways). In others, like Doom’s voice, I was very happy with it despite there being rumors it wasn’t great at CinemaCon. The trailer did not blow me away though, that’s for sure. Still, I’m there opening weekend anyway.

What did you think of the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday? Where would you rate it on my 1-10 scale for a trailer? Thoughts below as always.
