We all knew that Harry Potter was too much of a gravy train for Warner Bros. to end for too long. Plus, J.K. Rowling is the type of author who really throws her all into creating her worlds, and as such, has created an endless well from which to pull fresh water. A short five years after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, audiences were treated to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The film was set in the same world as Harry Potter, but it was by no means a Harry Potter story. Yes, it’s set in the same world, but it takes place decades prior in the 1920s in New York City. What’s more, the film didn’t follow the education of a few maturing wizards, but instead features an adult cast already living in the Wizarding World. Despite the similarities, there were more than enough differences to make this a unique experience for fans.
The film performed incredibly well, taking in $814 million worldwide on a $180 million budget, securing the need for a sequel. Warner Bros. has just announced that filming for the sequel — set to hit theaters in late 2018 — has officially begun, and on the heels of that announcement, they’ve also released an official synopsis for Fantastic Beasts 2.
Check it out below!
“J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.â€
Right off the bat, it’s evident that they’re not messing around with this sequel. While the first film was almost something of a “sidequest†with an undercurrent of what the main plot of the series would entail, this one jumps headfirst into the core of the mythology that will make up these movies. The use of Dumbledore (played this time by Jude Law) in the synopsis seems to imply a large role in the film, which is pretty great, considering how much fans want to see the wizard in action.
Also of note is the fact that this film sees the plot move from New York to London and then on to Paris — making this more of a globetrotting venture than we’ve seen in the past (things are usually restricted to a prime location. Even with films like The Deathly Hallows Part 1 where the characters are traveling, they’re still usually within a single country. The film also promises to have “some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.†Admittedly, that last one sounds like something an exec threw into the release, and less something that screenwriter J.K. Rowling would focus on just for the sake of it.
