Bad Boys 3 (a.k.a. Bad Boys for Life) has had a winding road of development. For nearly ten years it’s been on the back burner, and while not many folks were clamoring for another sequel, every so often we’d get a promise that, “yes, it’s still happening.†A couple years back, we even got Joe Carnahan on board to write and direct the film. We even got a nice, shiny release date of February 17, 2017 (so, last month). Since then, the film has been pushed back twice, with the latest release date revealed as November 9, 2018.
Over the course of the development of the film, Carnahan got himself attached a surprising number of other properties. In addition to scribing the Uncharted screenplay, he was revealed to be on board to direct the American Raid remake, as well as co-write (and potentially direct) and X-Force movie. His plate started to get so full, this writer started to wonder if he would have any time at all to actually direct Bad Boys for Life.
It turns out the answer to that is a resounding no.
THR has reported that the director has dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts, but their other sources say that creative differences also played a part in that departure.
So what does this mean for the production of Bad Boys for Life? That’s pretty hard to say. Given how long it’s been since the last film hit, is there another director who’d want to pick this up? Granted, it’s another Will Smith vehicle, and it can’t be overstated how much mass appeal that man has, but again, no one is really asking for this movie.
Regardless, while this new move spells uncertainty for Bad Boys for Life, it opens up Carnahan to focus on the other more interesting projects on his plate, not the least of which is the aforementioned X-Force.
What do you think of this news? Are you sad to see him leave Bad Boys For Life? Are you still hoping that the film gets made, or should the studio just end it with those first two? Let us know your thoughts down below!
