Yesterday we shared a rumor that the Fantastic Four were coming back to Marvel sooner than expected. According to theGWW, they had heard that Peyton Reed, director of Ant-Man was pushing ahead with a reboot of Marvel’s first family which could appear as early as 2022. Now that’s a lot earlier than anyone could have anticipated, given how Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was quoted as saying it could be 5 years before we see any of the ex-Fox properties appear in the MCU.

I did find it surprising I have to say, because as Feige has said himself, although we don’t know those plans yet, they generally plan around 5 years ahead. Whilst there is no actual obstacle to Marvel making a Fantastic Four film whenever they wish now, it felt like something else would have had to be pushed out to accommodate the hero family. It is quite possible that this happened though, and we know from quotes by Reed himself, that he pitched an idea for a ’60s-set movie to Fox away back, (some readers may remember I also wanted to see this film begin in the ’60s) so maybe they decided to just fast track it?
However, we now have three regular scoop sources kind of arguing about the validity of this information. Firstly we have Roger Wardell, whom we have shared scoops from in the past. Wardell says that according to his sources, this news is definitely wrong and that Reed isn’t making this movie for 2022. Check it out.
Fantastic Four rumor that's going around is totally false, they have enough on their plate already

Wardell has been right with a lot of details previously about both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame that turned out to be true. However, we also have Jeremy Conrad of MCU Cosmic taking up the cause for Thomas Polito, who was the writer who broke the initial story. Check it out
Yes this is true. His source on this has been rock solid. Not just what he listed below, but other things as well. https://t.co/3fOKnXfrZT

So who is correct here? We have one trusted scooper saying it’s a no-go and two regular scoopers saying its real? This is a hard one to call, but it seems like Conrad is saying that he has also heard this information and is happy with Polito’s sources, yet Wardell has a better hit rate for his scoops in the last couple years, so this is a tough call.
For me, I have to say I was immediately skeptical of this news when I heard it — probably because I covered the story where Feige said it would be five years until these new characters could be incorporated, and the one where Peyton Reed said he’d love to pitch a Fantastic Four idea to Marvel, and this was all in 2019. I do find it surprising that this pitch could have happened, and been approved, and fast-tracked for a 2022 release. At the same time, it’s always possible that Feige was being slightly coy with fans the last time he spoke about this, I mean, why would he say anything before they wish to reveal their plans? I would say it didn’t feel like a coy answer, but unless you are the person who asked Feige the questions, that’s a hard call to make.
We also have to consider an Ant-Man and the Wasp sequel, which would surely be a higher priority right now for Marvel than introducing the Fantastic Four? Paul Rudd’s popularity as Scott Lang has never been higher thanks to his brilliant turn in Avengers: Endgame, and you’d think both he and Evangeline Lilly wouldn’t want to be sidelined for the next five years? So if Peyton Reed was making Fantastic Four, does that mean no sequel for Ant-Man and the Wasp on the horizon, or is someone else taking over that gig?
I know, I’m not giving you any answers here, I am simply raising questions which may help you to make your own mind up on which view to take between these opposing scoops. At the end of the day you choose to believe whatever you want to believe. As a naturally skeptical person, I myself tend to gravitate towards having doubts about this news. But who knows, maybe there is a big surprise waiting for us when Marvel announces their next slate of movies sometime this summer (probably at SDCC 2019 or D23, if I were to guess).
