A couple weeks back, we reminded you that Men In Black still actually had a spinoff film in the works. After it disappearing off the face of the earth for a few months, Sony shifted its date from May 209 to June 2019. This seemed to prove two things:
1) They wanted to steer clear of John Wick: Chapter Three.
2) They had enough confidence in the film happening that they only pushed it back a couple months, rather than wipe it from their slate completely.
Now, it seems like that news was setting the stage for more to come. According to Deadline, Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton (not to mention Friday, one of the best movies ever) director F. Gary Gray is currently in talks to relaunch the franchise with this upcoming spinoff.
So not only do we have a director in talks for the film, but it’s coupled with the news that this isn’t just going to be some spinoff for the franchise, but will likely be the new main throughline of things going forward — so don’t expect another K and J film any time soon.
This Men In Black film has a script from Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, and from what we know, the script is pretty much good to go.
One big downside here is that this pretty much puts the final nail in the coffin for a Men In Black/ 21 Jump Street crossover.
Are you excited to hear that Sony and Amblin are closing in on a direction for Men In Black, or do you think Sony continues to rely too heavily on established properties? Let us know your thoughts down below!
