Final Fantasy Live-Action Series In The Works!

For decades, Squaresoft (and later Square Enix) has been working hard to turn Final Fantasy into a multimedia property. Of course, it got its start as a video game franchise, but it’s also had a few cracks at the big and small screen to varying (though mostly negative success). While the games generally seem to be well-received as a whole, they can’t see to crack the code on the narrative front. Well, hopefully, that’ll be changing soon.

According to a new press release, Hivemind, producer of The Expanse at Amazon and The Witcher for Netflix is co-producing a live-action series based on the Japanese property. They will be partnering up with Sony Pictures Television and, of course, Square Enix to bring it to the small screen.

Jason F. Brown, Sean Daniel, And Dinesh Shamadasani will be producing, and on board to write and executive produce are unknowns Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton (though Thornton does have a good amount of acting experience).

The show will also reportedly features series trademarks like airships, magic, and the bird creatures known as Chocobos. There’s even going to be a version of Cid, which is a name that pops up in every Final Fantasy game (here’s hoping we also get a Biggs and Wedge).

Interestingly enough, we actually have some details regarding its setting. The outlet states that it will be set in an established world for the game…but that the setting will be Eorzea, where the MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is set. So no, don’t expect to see anything from the more narrative-centric takes on the franchise.

Upon first reading this, I was skeptical, but this may be for the best. With this, they won’t be tethered to any crazy narrative and can pretty much tell whatever story they want in this setting. I actually think I approve!

FINAL FANTASY XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into FINAL FANTASY for longtime fans and newcomers alike,” said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. “This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it’s an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea’s iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience.”

“Television is the ideal medium to capture the extraordinary depth, sophisticated themes, and unparalleled imagination of FINAL FANTASY and its multitude of unique and fully realized characters,” said Jason Brown, Hivemind Co-Founder and Co-President. “We are working tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world who are united in honoring the extraordinary legacy of this franchise and its millions of fans around the world.”

But the big question is whether or not you or resident LRM Online Final Fantasy nut Kyle Malone will approve.
