Looks like Final Fantasy VII Remake is showing signs of life. Sorta. Maybe. It depends on what you consider life. This game with a development time of seemingly more than a handful of years already, with no end in sight, is getting another director added to the mix, Square Enix Japan has announced. The dev released an official statement where Naoki Hamaguchi was announced as a new co-director for the ambitious title.
Hamaguchi will be joining the current director Tetsuya Nomura, who most recently released Kingdom Hearts III. There is no information as to why they’ve added another director to the mix. There is some speculation pointing to the dev hoping for a change in direction, but it’s also possible this is just being done to help speed up overall production so they can start making real progress. It’s hard to say at this point.

Those who’ve been following Final Fantasy VII Remake know that it’s been in the works for a long time. Way back in 2015, it was announced during E3 2015, where we saw some pretty impressive footage that wowed audiences. As exciting as that was, there’s been little to no progress on the actual game — or at least none they’ve mentioned to us.
Honestly, I’m just interested to see what the gameplay will feel like. Obviously, the original featured turn-based combat, and the Remake looks to feature more action-RPG elements. But will it feel close enough to the original to please fans? That will be a tall order. This is considered by many to be one of the greatest JRPGs of all time, and the nostalgia goggle effect is all too real in games like this.
Hopefully, the new director will help bring things a bit closer to that unreachable standard.
