Coming out of the closet is no easy feat.

In Dating Amber, two gay high school friends decided to enter into a pretend straight relationship in order to fool their friends, parents, and community. Instead, their relationship blossomed into an unlikely friendship that neither expected.

The film stars Fionn O’Shea (Handsome Devil, Normal People), Lola Petticrew (Wolf, A Bump Along the Way), Sharon Horgan (Military Wives, Game Night), and Barry Ward (White Lines, Extra Ordinary). David Freyne (The Cured) wrote and directed the movie.

Here’s the brief synopsis:

A closeted gay teen and his lesbian counterpart pretend to be a couple to avoid suspicion.

In a special statement from the director, he wrote, “Dating Amber is my story or, at least, as autobiographical as I’ll ever get. Alas, all the really cringy funny moments are the most truthful bits; desperately failing to touch a girl’s breast, nun led sex-ed (the unbelievable video is verbatim based on the real thing), or my mother finding my self-created gay pornography. As a younger man, I was so wrapped up in the depression and anxiety of being gay that I failed to see the funny side of, well, being wrapped up in the depression and anxiety of being gay.”

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with actor Fionn O’Shea on playing the lead role of Eddie. He talked about developing his own off-screen friendship with actress Lola Petticrew, the comedy bits, and the queer coming of age themed story.

Fionn O’Shea is a young Irish actor, who is best known as Jamie in the television series Normal People. Also, he had a breakout role as Ned Roche in 2016’s Handsome Devil. His next upcoming project is with Anthony Russo and Joe Russo-directed drama Cherry that stars Tom Holland.
