Is a Firefly reboot coming to Disney+? Firefly has been a cult hit since the show first began, and was cancelled fairly early on. Fans for many years have wanted a Firefly return, though to be fair they want the original cast back also. As the years have waned, it seemed increasingly unlikely that the likes of Nathan Fillion would ever sit in the Serenity once more.
The question is, has enough time passed that fans will accept a full reboot? As part of Disney’s Fox acquisition, they got the rights to Firefly. According to our friends over at GiantFreakingRobot, there’s a Firefly reboot coming to Disney+.
“My source tells me that Disney is in early development on a Firefly reboot. The new show would start the story of Captain Mal Reynolds and his crew aboard the Serenity over from scratch, with an aim to make this a long-running series on Disney+. There is a twist here and the twist is that they see the show as ideal family-friendly programming for Disney+. My source tells me they’re planning to target it more at a PG-adventure, family audience and less at the sort of PG-13 dynamic the original Joss Whedon show went for.”

The outlet were unable to get confirmation that Joss Whedon was not involved. However, as they say, and I agree, right now that seems unlikely. I think if Whedon was going to work on anything currently it would be the show he just left on HBO, The Nevers. Right now does not seem like the best to employ Whedon, with all the accusations from Ray Fisher and the internal WB investigations.
Honestly, I am not sure fans would go for a more family friendly version of Firefly. If anything I would guess fans might prefer a reboot to become a little more adult oriented. So we shall have to see how this one develops. Would you be interested in seeing a Firefly reboot coming to Disney+? Let us know below in the usual spot.
