Fox and IMAX Re-Up Deal With Film Slate That Includes An Untitled Marvel Movie

Nowadays, there are more ways to view movies than ever. You can watch them on your laptop, desktop, phone, tablet, or home theater system. As such, theaters are trying harder and harder to make the moviegoing tradition something unique and special. Among their many different ventures is the increased use of the IMAX format, which gives audiences the opportunity to have a truly immersive experience.

Today, Twentieth Century Fox and IMAX announced that they would be “re-upping their existing long-term partnership,” signing a multi-picture deal that includes such films as Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Predator, Alita: Battle Angel, and an untitled Marvel film.

Greg Foster, Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp, said the following of the announcementa:

“After sharing success with such recent box-office hits as the global phenomenon Deadpool, we are thrilled to sweeten the existing deal with our friends and partners at Twentieth Century Fox by providing IMAX fans worldwide a selection of the studio’s most exciting upcoming blockbusters. With this agreement, we look forward to expanding our partnership with Fox and together offer fans around the world IMAX’s one-of-a-kind movie-going experience.”

Given audience’s tendency to seek out more immersive experiences, this comes as no huge surprise — but the bit that interests me has to do with the “studio’s untitled Marvel film.” The obvious question is…what film it could be?

Thus far, we are aware of Wolverine III, Deadpool 2, and New Mutants. The Gambit movie has, as far as we know, been pushed indefinitely to the future, and the next official X-Men movie has yet to be announced…so which one is it? Given that both Wolverine III and Deadpool 2 have release dates, I think it’s safe to rule those out. The New Mutants on the other hand, seems like a definite possibility, as the movie has yet to get an official release date, though all signs point to filming beginning early next year. However, since Fox went out of their way to state that the IMAX film is an “untitled Marvel film” — and we already know The New Mutants exists — I’m going to rule out New Mutants as well.

This leaves a few options: Gambit, a new X-Men film, and another completely different property. Given the uncertainty surrounding Gambit, I’d sincerely doubt they’d be referring to that film, so this leaves us with either an X-Men film or one unknown entity.

My own personal guess is that this will be a new X-Men film, as it’s the one property they seem to get right most of the time — and one that’s at the very least guaranteed to bring in audiences, should the quality be up to snuff. Sure, they could be referring to just about anything, but at the end of the day, the one proven comic book entity in their arsenal over the past fifteen years has been X-Men. While technically, all those other brands exist within the same universe, they carry none of the same recognition, and therefore, would likely not be the picture they felt they needed to tout for this announcement. Is this our first indication that they’re getting close to announcing a new X-Men film? We’ll have to wait and see!

What do you think of this announcement? What untitled Marvel film do you believe they’re referring to? Let us know in the comments down below!
