Francis Ford Coppola Says ‘Despicable’ Marvel Movie Comments Were Misinterpreted

So, we are back to this topic, but I think we’ve finally arrived at a better place in terms of everyone’s comments. Martin Scorsese has since backpedaled his comments about Marvel movies not being cinema, and in this latest quote from Francis Ford Coppola, the Godfather helmer had a chance to clarify what he meant when he said Marvel movies were “despicable.”

As it turns out, that wasn’t what he said at all, but rather was a misinterpreted line, and it had less to do with the quality of those films and more to do with the circumstances in how they were developed. Here’s what he told Deadline.

“Personally I don’t like the idea of franchises, the notion that you can keep repeating what is essentially the same movie for financial gain — in other words, what is a formulaic approach.

“I feel that approach is taken to reduce the economic risk of movies, and I feel the “risk factor” is an element that makes movies sometimes be great. Also, the formulaic film draws most available resources to them, leaving little for more daring productions, reducing diversity.

“In some ways I think the cinema is like food; certainly you can add things to make it tempting, tasty and enjoyable but it must also be nutritious to qualify as real food.”

And you know what? He’s not wrong, though, given the way business as a whole works, it makes sense that studios would be drawn to those easy ideas that they know will make money. Though, in recent years, we’ve seen a true emphasis on those tentpoles and a decreased emphasis on those unique ideas…in theaters, at least.

When all said and done, I think a lot of those ideas hit streaming services, and if you take the time to look, you’ll find those special types of projects with inherent risk on Netflix.
