Horror enthusiasts and Francis Ford Coppola fans must rejoice. One of the first films he directed and wrote arrives back to our shelf space with Dementia 13: Director’s Cut.

Lionsgate and American Zoetrope plan to release the cult classic film in HD on Blu-ray, 4K on digital on September 21.

This 1963 film helped launch Francis Ford Coppola’s career as an established director, which eventually leads him to The Godfather series and my favorite horror film eventually with Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The original film was shown on the poor quality of 16 mm prints or transfers, and now it’s remastered in HD and 4K. Although it is in the original black and white format, the film looks crisp, clear, and gorgeous for horror lovers.

Dementia 13 obviously occupies a place in my heart as my first film and I’m very proud that it can now exist as I intended it,” said Coppola in a press release.

Here’s the synopsis of the film:

Dementia 13: Director’s Cut is quintessential gothic horror, wrapped in the twisted mysteries of a family’s deepest, darkest secrets. A widow deceives her late husband’s mother and brother into thinking he’s still alive when she attends the yearly memorial to his drowned sister, hoping to secure his inheritance. But her cunning is no match for the demented, ax-wielding thing roaming the grounds of the family’s Irish estate in this cult favorite film featuring Patrick Magee, Luana Anders, William Campbell, and Bart Patton.

The Blu-ray special features include an introduction by Francis Ford Coppola and an audio commentary by the director. There is an additional test prologue included in the Blu-ray special features.

This film has been remade multiple times in one fashion or another, but the original sets a high bar. Nonetheless, Francis Ford Copolla’s Dementia 13 helped inspire a generation of horror directors with its gothic and creepy moods in horror films.
