Frozen 2 Headed To $120M Opener

It really does look like Frozen II is headed into the unknown this coming weekend. Yesterday, the film managed to make $8.5 million in its Thursday night preview screenings. Compared to the typical Marvel Studios tentpole Thursday nights, it isn’t exactly blowing off the doors of the theaters, but we can’t forget that animation is a whole other game, and this film is still on its way to surpassing its predecessor, which currently sits at the no. 2 spot of highest-grossing animated features, behind this year’s The Lion King.

THR is reporting that based on early Friday returns, Frozen II could make around $120 million in its opening weekend. It would also nab the title of the first-ever animated film to break $100 million in its opening weekend outside of the summer season.

Disney themselves are projecting $110 million to $120 million for the opener, while others are more optimistic, pegging it around $130 million or so. Regardless, it looks like it’s going to be one heck of an opening for Disney’s first theatrically-released animated sequel.
