Franchises never really die in Hollywood, as sometimes a spinoff is just what the doctor ordered!
I’m not sure what doctor prescribed this, but The Hollywood Reporter is, ahem, reporting that popular G.I. Joe character Snake Eyes is getting his own movie. This follows in the recent trend of “sort of” building franchises by way of spinoff, with the Transformers franchise next debuting Bumblebee and Fast & Furious getting a Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spinoff.
Paramount Pictures has begun development on their first G.I. Joe spinoff, Snake Eyes, with Evan Spiliotopoulos in talks the write the script. Previously, Spiliotopoulos penned Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
As you may know, Snake Eyes is the silent ninja commando. The character first appeared in the 1980s with Hasbro and Marvel Comics’ relaunch of the toyline. Snake Eyes dresses in all black and never reveals his face, as all good ninjas know to do. He rarely spoke, adding to the mystery of the character, making him one of the most popular characters from the franchise.
It has been a long while since 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and even longer since 2009’s original entry, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It has been said this is the start of a G.I. Joe reboot, as Hasbro has created a writers room of their own to generate movie ideas.
