Gambit To Be Romantic Comedy To Shoot Next Year, Fox Still Developing Other Superhero projects

I know. Disney has all but acquired Fox at this point, and many fans are just waiting to see all of their Marvel properties revert back over to Marvel Studios. For years, we’ve been anxious to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four join up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with this acquisition happening, many expected that Dark Phoenix, The New Mutants, and X-Force would be the last ones made under the typical Fox banner.

Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The standalone Gambit film has been in development for years, and speaking with IGN, its producer not only revealed it to fall into an unexpected genre but that it could begin production next year. Here’s what he said.

“When you look at Gambit,” Kinberg told the outlet, “he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy.”

Kinberg continued:

“Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film.”

If you’re sitting there and thinking, “Why the hell would they make Gambit a romantic comedy?” Kinberg can basically read your mind, and was ready with a defense.

“You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

Kinberg went on to say they have a great script and they are hoping to shoot it early next year…but those aren’t the only films he gave updates on.

Multiple Man, that script’s being worked on right now. [As for X-Force] we’re just waiting for Drew Goddard to be done with releasing his film that comes out in a few weeks, and then he’ll get started on that script to direct.”

So don’t think they’ll be pulling the plug just yet. Of course, that may all change once Disney actually takes control, but business continues as usual. In short, don’t expect this stuff to happen overnight.
