The Long Night is the next big Game of Thrones project heading towards production over at HBO. However, we’ve known for a long time that there are a solid handful of other projects in development, even if we don’t know if the majority of them are sequels, prequels, spin-offs, or something completely different altogether. Now, we may have our first clues as to what we’ll be getting in addition to the Long Night prequel.

Of course, this news came courtesy of Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin himself, who took to his “not a blog” blog to tease us with one project, in particular, that seems to be gaining momentum over at the cable network. He doesn’t give us explicit details, but fans will likely be able to read between the lines pretty well. Here’s what he said:

“Meanwhile, there are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. The readers among you might want to grab a copy of FIRE & BLOOD when it is released on November 20, though.”

For those unfamiliar, the upcoming Fire & Blood book is being pitched as a history of the Targaryen family — the latest of which is none other than Daenerys Targaryen, the woman with a thousand epithets who seems destined to seize back the Iron Throne (though we’ll have to see if that eventually happens).

This seems to hint at the idea of a prequel centered on the Targaryen family, but given that the book is set to be a complete history, it doesn’t exactly narrow down which generation we’ll be following or what the story will ultimately be — though given that Fire & Blood is set to be one of two volumes, perhaps this at least rules out the latter half of the Targaryen generations.
