According to a new report, a Game of Thrones movie is in development at WB. This would mark the first time that the franchise has moved out of the TV format with HBO and across to the cinema side of WB. So far it is very early days, no writers and no director have been attached. Therefore, we have no idea what story the studio is looking to turn into a film.
As per THR;
‘Warner Bros. has been quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.’
‘Multiple sources describe the project as very early stage development, with no filmmaker, cast or writer yet attached. But the company is keen on exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas.’
‘The move might represent a shift in the company’s strategy regarding the property.’

Don’t get me wrong, the idea to turn a successful TV franchise into a box office attraction is hardly new. Just look at the next Star Wars film coming from Lucasfilm, which is a spin-off of the TV series The Mandalorian. However, as with any movie, it’s really going to depend on the story being told. What story from the history of Westeros would work as a self contained 2+ hour movie? The TV series always seemed perfect for a franchise which focuses on character drama before spectacle. The budget for the battles and effects will be higher (per minute)than a TV series. However, it then becomes finding the right story which would utilise that extra budget well without diminishing the drama we associate with this franchise.
The other thing to consider is this, it might not happen. The idea of making a Game of Thrones movie is being explored. However, without any writers or directors attached it could still be decided that they do not move ahead with the plans. Either way, I’m guessing it could be several years before we get any proper announcements that this movie is commencing production.
