Game of Thrones seems to be the masters of ramping up every aspect of their show. Starting out, the magical elements of the series were pretty mild. Sure, we saw bits and pieces of it here and there, but a good chunk of it felt an awful lot more like a legit historical medieval portrayal than a fantastical one. In virtually every aspect, they’ve started small, and worked their way into bigger things. This is also true for the dragons.
For most of Season 1 of Game of Thrones, there were virtually no dragons to speak of, and as far as we knew, there were none left in existence. In Season 2, we saw the dragons riding on Daenerys Targaryen’s shoulders, and in each successive season, they’ve gotten bigger. When last we saw them, they were big enough for her to ride, but they ain’t done growing yet. Not by a long shot.
In the upcoming Season 7 of Game of Thrones, the battle is heading to Westeros, and the dragons themselves have now reached an unwieldy size. One of the four directors for the next season, Matt Shakman, gave EW a crazy size comparison.
“The dragons this year are the size of 747s. Drogon is the biggest of the bunch — his flame is 30-feet in diameter!â€
I want you to take a moment not just to think about the size of the dragons, but the size of the aforementioned flame. By diameter, I’m assume that’s if you’re looking the dragon straight in the face (from a safe distance of course). If he blows a flame at you, it’s literally three stories high and three stories wide. Those are some crazy figures to think about, and it goes a long way to really give this impending battle some heft.
It’s hard not to respect the job the series has done at slowly ramping up the scope of this thing. Some series or stories try to go too big too soon, thereby alienating a lot of potential fans. But with Game of Thrones, they managed to snag an audience’s attention with its human elements early on before bringing in the crazy.
