I will admit that I did not jump on the Game of Thrones hype train until it was recommended to me in between season three and four. Since then I have not missed an episode and am eagerly awaiting this Sunday’s episode which is to be the longest of the entire series at one hour twenty-two minutes. As we have gotten closer to the epic conclusion of Game of Thrones it’s popularity has also risen, as it seems as a lot of people jumped on and caught up to this season.
Evidence of this can be seen in the ratings provided by Nielsen’s preliminary figures via Variety. This past week’s episode titled “A Knight in the Seven Kingdoms” had approximately 10.29 million viewers. This makes it the fourth largest episode of the series in terms of linear audience. The episodes ahead of it are the season eight finale, season 8 premiere with 12.07 million and the fifth episode of season seven with 10.72 million.
Across all platforms, including linear, HBO Go and HBO Now, HBO reports that last weeks episode had a total of 15.9 million viewers. This is an 8.6% drop from the previous weeks 17.4 million. The explanation for this according to the report is that within the Nielsen measuring period there was only one replay of this weeks episode while the previous one had two.
Speaking of the premiere for season eight, the total viewership is now up to 27.7 million viewers after the additional week. This is 6.5 million viewers more than the premiere of season seven had at the same point. Overall this past weekend was huge for HBO as it had its largest night of streaming activity every for them. Also, their season eight premiere was the most tweeted about Game of Thrones episode in the social media’s history, with over 5 million tweets.
