Game Of Thrones: Some Actors Brought In To Shoot Finale Were There To Fool Fans [SPOILERS]

Last night I managed to catch the HBO documentary The Last Watch, which was all about the making of Game of Thrones Season 8. It was on the same channel the show appeared on in the UK, I mention this as yesterday I was lamenting that I couldn’t see it as it was only on HBO in the US in another article.

I enjoyed the documentary, though for me it further highlighted that the decision to cram so much into Season 8 instead of splitting into a 9th season just didn’t work on any level as the crew, whilst doing an amazing job, were seriously overworked. One or two crew members had commented on how they had found the limit for how much you could do in one season of the show.

One of the interesting things shown in the video was that certain actors were brought to Spain to fool any journalists or fans. The producers asked the actors who played Jaqen H’ghar, The Waif, and The Night King to arrive in Spain even though they wouldn’t be shooting there. Jon Snow himself Kit Harington was also in Spain, even though he wasn’t actually filming any scenes there for the scene in question which was when the Lords and Ladies of Westeros chose Bran to be king. The idea was to throw off anyone looking to work out what would happen by noting which cast members were there. Of course, by this time the Night King was already dead in the show and neither Jaqen H’Ghar nor The Waif featured at all since Season 6 of the show. In fact, the Waif was also dead at the hands of Arya in Season 6.

Interesting idea, but ultimately fruitless, as to be honest we heard no reports about any of these actors being present to begin with. We also had serious leaks for Season 8, and whilst I didn’t go near them until the final episode, I then checked back to see how accurate these supposed leaks were and they were on the money. They actually revealed the majority of the main plot points from Season 8, including Bran as King and Jon killing Dany and being sent back to the wall for this. I’m damn glad I never looked at these, because many people were pegging these as fake from what I can tell when they were first revealed (looking at older comments), so it was possible to come across them by accident and I knew about them without ever reading them.

So I guess their tactics here, along with all the security did not really work when it came to leaks for the final season. All it really takes is someone in the know to decide they are going to put leaks out there and it’s a real shame people working on the show decided to do this. Whatever you may think of the final season of Game of Thrones, I’m sure no one really wanted to have the details leaked before the episodes were broadcast.
