Game Of Thrones Star Iwan Rheon Says Rape Scene Was Worst Day Of His Career

Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon has been talking about  the worst day of his career. Specifically the day he had to film the scene where his awful character Ramsay Bolton had to rape Sansa Stark played by Sophie Turner. In the show, Ramsay and Sansa had just been married. Whilst Sansa was expecting to have to sleep with Ramsay (begrudgingly), she was not expecting to be raped whilst Theon Greyjoy was made to watch. It was a harrowing scene, but then, that’s Game of Thrones. Ramsay Bolton was one of the nastiest characters to ever appear on TV. In some ways it would have been out of place for Ramsay not to abuse Sansa?

That does not mean it was an easy scene for Iwan Rheon to film though. Rheon spoke with Metro recently and described his thoughts on the scene.

“That was horrible. Nobody wanted to be there. Nobody wants to do that, but if it’s telling a story then you have to tell it truthfully. They didn’t sensationalise it or anything. It was very, very hard watching. It’s a horrible thing that happens, unfortunately, and it shouldn’t be. It was the worst day of my career. Chopping someone’s finger off you don’t really see it, and when you’re doing like a close up, it’s a piece of plastic. We’re just acting, it’s not real. Then something like that where you’re in the actual reality of the situation is very difficult to deal with. It was a horrible, horrible day.”

It was hard enough watching the scene play out, knowing it’s all fake. It must be quote harrowing for actors to have to do awful things like this, but it’s part of the job. I you are playing a psychopath that get’s off on inflicting abuse, then you have to appear to enjoy it. That would be tough I imagine, but then I am not an actor.

Do you agree with Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon that it was necessary to show this scene from a story point of view? Or do you feel this could have been toned down somewhat for the show? Leave your thoughts below as always.
