Game Of Thrones Star Thinks Star Wars Has Lacked ‘Decent Storytelling’ Lately

Just say the words Star Wars and chances are you’ll find someone with plenty of opinions about the current state of the brand. Talk to someone like me and I’ll go off about how Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a much-needed shot of adrenaline in the franchise, and talk to someone like our own Cam Clark and he’ll talk about how the series has never been at a lower point and how everyone’s goals failing somehow breaks the series.

And I can disagree with Cam until I’m blue in the face, but the reality is he’s not the only one who thinks this. In fact, it looks like there are even some folks working on Game of Thrones who think there is a missing piece of the puzzle. More specifically, I’m talking about Liam Cunningham, the actor who plays Davos Seaworth in the show. Here’s what he had to say about the film:

“It’s funny because George [Lucas] came here and talked to the boys, and the one thing the Star Wars franchise has been missing lately is decent storytelling. There’s a lot of brilliant stuff in Star Wars, it’s an epic franchise, but occasionally, story-wise, it’s left a little to be desired. Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] are brilliant at surprises and can transfer the demographic from this show to that [franchise]. They’re incredible at adapting a world and making it their own and they could add a layer of complexity to it. I’d love it if they gave me some words to say, though I’d probably just be in a helmet.”

Okay, I have thoughts. How in the world is a set visit from George Lucas prompting this response? I can’t fathom anyone thinking the man himself could do any better with the franchise than these last two movies…but undercurrents of rage aside, there is still some excitement to be had. Weiss and Benioff have certainly spun gold from straw with Game of Thrones, and them bringing their storytelling sensibilities to Star Wars will indeed inject new blood into things.

But will fans even like it? I doubt it.
