Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for the most recent episode of Game of Thrones.
The final season of Game of Thrones is, confusing. Not that the story is hard to follow, confusing in the way that I don’t mind the direction the story has taken, but it’s the way the story is being told to me with which I take issue.
In the most recent episode, Queen Cersei Lannister and her brother Jaime, were killed during the rampage of King’s Landing by Daenerys Targaryen. A number of fans expressed their dislike for the way one of the most hated characters was killed (as well as Jaime’s arc). The actress who plays Cersei, Lena Headley recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and talked about her character in the show’s final season, you can check out what she had to say below.
“She starts off in this final season trapped in a web of her own making, as is usual with Cersei. She’s desperately unhappy and everything that’s happened becomes more real than it ever has for her. She starts to lose control of the situation. She’s destroyed every good alliance, connection, love in her life — she was always destined to be alone. And until the very, very last minute, she is, as ever, in denial of what’s actually happening.”

Headley continued:
“The more we talked about it the more it seemed like the perfect end for her. They came into the world together and now they leave together.”
Cersei deserved either a more gruesome death, or an escape. I really wouldn’t have minded seeing Cersei make it out alive, as there is probably no one better than her at playing the political game of Westeros. Unfortunately, there’s aren’t many mind games one can play with a dragon, and her city fell.
GoT is still my favorite show and it likely will be for some time. As I said above, I’m fine with the story, just not the way it’s being presented. For six seasons, showrunners Benioff and Weiss masterfully told the story to us viewers, now one of the best parts of the storytelling, the build-up, is missing.
