Game of Thrones Author Hadn’t Anticipated The Show Would Beat Him To The Ending

Game of Thrones is ending and while the story for these TV characters ends here, the story for the characters of the books is still going strong. A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR. Martin has still not finished the sixth book of his planned seven-book series The Winds of Winter.

We know that the show will finish this year and give us some kind of ending for the story, but how different things will develop in the books is anyone’s guess? Martin recently talked about this and you can catch up with my take on it in the related section below. However, one does wonder whether Martin wishes he could go back and not start the TV show until much later, to give him time to finish the books. But would this have really made any difference? would Game of Thrones have been the mega-hit it was unless it came out at exactly the time it did?

Speaking with EW recently Martin did say he had “mixed feelings about that” when asked about the show’s ending approaching. Martin then went on to add.

“It’s been an incredible ride, and almost all of it has been great. Obviously, I wished I finished these books sooner so the show hadn’t gotten ahead of me. I never anticipated that.”

At the point Game of Thrones was first commissioned I am sure Martin had no idea of how long it would take him to break that 6th book and as yet we still have no idea when, or if it will ever see the light of day. So it might be the end of the show this year, but it’s a long way from the end of the books as the author says.

“It’s the end for a lot of people, it’s not the end for me. I’m still deeply in it. I better live a long time because I have a lot of work left to do.”

Martin is also acting as a consultant for several possible spin-off shows, the first of which is being called The Long Night for now and will start filming this year. This new show will detail some of the ancient history of Westeros including the original attack of the White Walkers and the army of the dead.  However, like Game of Thrones, don’t expect The Long Night to happen the way you think it will from all the old stories.
