Gears Of War Movie Lands Screenwriter In F. Scott Frazier

Gears of War is a popular series of third-person shooter video games on the Xbox platform. The series began back in 2006 on Xbox 360 and has since spawned many sequels leading to the most recent Gears of War 4 on Xbox One. It has been rumored that a movie was going to be made out of the franchise for quite some time, years in fact, but it now appears as if things are finally moving ahead on a movie adaptation.

The Wrap reports that their sources have indicated that F. Scott Frazier (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) has been tapped to write the screenplay for Universal Pictures who optioned the motion picture rights back in 2016. Dylan Clark (Oblivion) will produce along with Gears of War co-creator Rod Ferguson and the movie will be executive produced by Scott Stuber (Ted).

Gears of War tells the story of a human civilization on the planet of Sera. In the aftermath of a brutal civil war, humanity faces extinction on Emergence Day when a vast army of creatures known as the Locust emerge from underground and attempt to wipe out humanity. The game focused on court-martialled ex-Sergeant Marcus Fenix as he is freed from prison during humanities most desperate hour as they attempt to strike back against the Locust Horde.

I was at one time a massive fan of these games, especially the first game. However, the second game was a huge disappointment to me and I ended up getting a lifetime ban (oops) from Epic Forums for organizing constructive feedback to the game developers. After a civilized debate with one of the game developers, he decided to life ban me and that tells you everything you need to know about my feelings towards Epic Games. The Gears of War franchise was purchased fully from Epic Games back in 2014 with Ferguson moving to head up the newly created Coalition Studios who would go on to make Gears of War 4.

I actually think Gears of War could make for a suitably epic movie given the right script, so my one tip for Mr. Frazier would be to focus on the tone and spirit of the original game and less on its rather bloated and less sinister sequels. After all, I’m sure he reads LRM regularly, why wouldn’t you?
