Ghostbusters has been pretty controversial from the very beginning. Yes, that original movie has gone on to be a major staple of any film geek’s diet, but that first movie is the only one that’s generally accepted by most fans. That sequel that hit a few years later isn’t really beloved, and that 2016 film is one that almost set the entire world on fire — luckily, Star Wars: The Last Jedi was right around the corner for the haters to flock to.
But Ghostbusters (2016) director Paul Feig has always stood by his film, and I’m sure there were plenty of fans out there who had their eyes on his Twitter account as soon as that first trailer dropped for the new Jason Reitman-directed movie.

“This looks so awesome,” Feig wrote in a tweet. “Huge congrats to @JasonReitman and his amazing cast and crew. I cannot WAIT to see this! #weareallghostbusters 👻🏆👏❤️”

I mean, I can’t disagree with Feig here. While I don’t necessarily think Ghostbusters: Afterlife feels anything like the original movie, I do think the trailer makes it look as though it stands alone pretty darn well as its own thing, while still being deeply connected to the mythology of the franchise as a whole.
