Production has officially kicked off in Buffalo, New York, on Circles, the long awaited sequel to the cult psychological thriller Circle. The original film, which gained a following after debuting on Netflix nearly a decade ago, placed 50 strangers in a deadly social experiment where only one could survive based on a chilling series of votes and moral debates.
Now, a new chapter begins.

Dutch director Niels Bourgonje has been tapped to helm the sequel. Known for his award-winning horror short Swipe, which is currently being developed into a feature film, Bourgonje brings a fresh yet unsettling vision to the franchise. He expressed excitement about reimagining the tension of the original for today’s audience, saying the new film will reflect the deepening divides and anxieties of the modern world.
Returning from the original film is actor Michael Nardelli (American Crime Story), who also returns behind the scenes as a producer. He’s joined by Carmen Flood (Long Slow Exhale), Cameron Mann (Eddington), Luca Padovan (You), Maia Jae (Gen V), Corrado Martini (Collapser), Isaiah Dodo-Williams (Public Defenders), Laila Drew (Suffs), and siblings Scout and Sophia Tayui-Lepore (The Studio), along with Mareau Hall (Babygirl).
The sequel picks up 18 years after the original events, with the surviving players of the mysterious experiment now facing a new and ominous threat. The film’s official logline teases another round of psychological warfare but on a potentially grander, more dangerous scale.
Behind the scenes, Circles reunites much of the original creative team. Alongside Nardelli, producer Brent Stiefel (Tow) returns, with executive producers Jeffrey Leaf (Bob Trevino Likes It), Tim Nardelli (Circle), and Justin Lothrop (Tow) also joining the project. The screenplay comes from Devon Graye, known for the tense thriller I See You.

Bourgonje stated that the original film tapped into cultural anxieties about trust, division, and the value of human life, issues that remain all too relevant today. With Circles, he promises to dive even deeper into those fears, while delivering a suspenseful experience that aims to captivate longtime fans and newcomers alike.
