In a recent article covering the upcoming movie, it was revealed that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will have a new big bad. Previous movie Afterlife of course recycled the bad guy from the original Ghostbusters. However, the article states that come Frozen Empire we are in a post-Gozerian era. There was also a first still from the movie in Empire‘s article, but we can’t share that. If you click the source link you will see Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) and Mr Grooberson (Paul Rudd).
What we can share is this, from director Gil Kenan:
‘Get ready to experience the Death Chill, a fatal frost enveloping New York in the middle of a sweltering summer, with a glowy-eyed horned figure looming in the mist. “Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past,” explains Kenan.’
“But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that’s thrilling as a storyteller, because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on.”

I was never against the recycling of Gozer in Afterlife. I had issues with that movie, but the decision to bring back Gozer wasn’t actually one of them. However, I did worry that this sequel would just somehow feature Vigo from GB2. So I’m kinda happy this is the case. Does this mean Frozen Empire will be a good movie? No idea, but we shall find out next year.
The NYC setting is an improvement, as is the more active it seems OG crew. Both were issues I had with Afterlife. However, the lack of much of a story, or much character development for anyone outside of Egon’s granddaughter were bigger issues.
What do you think then as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will have a new big bad? It seemed so from the trailers, but what do you think of Kenan’s comments? Thoughts below as always.
