Gotham: Season 3 – “Blood Rush” Takeaways and Predictions

Photo Courtesy of Fox. Captain Barnes – Barnes opens the episode tracking an individual who had dismembered bodies in the back of a truck.  The Captain’s anger is becoming uncontrollable and he is seen attacking the criminal, and eventually, brutally kills him by ripping his head from his body.  After realizing his actions, Barnes goes to Arkham to visit Tetch, who can clearly tell that his sister is “in him”.  Tetch tells him that he may think he is beating the virus, but in actuality, the virus is beating him.  Barnes continues to track down the plastic surgeon who had connections to the criminal with the dismembered bodies, which leads him toMario and Lee’s engagement party.  He ends up beating the surgeon through a wall, in which he plummets onto the top of a parked car.  Barnes has seemed to embrace the rage claiming that he is the judge, jury, and executioner as all of Gotham is guilty.  He later tells Gordon that they will make a difference in Gotham.  Gordon seems somewhat confused by the statement.  The episode ends with Barnes beginning to hear the voices Tetch said would take over his mind, and Gordon finds the body of the plastic surgeon… not quite dead!  When he asks who did this to him, he replies that is was Barnes! Predictions – Captain Barnes was the focus of the plot in this episode.  His rage is becoming worse and instead of trying to fight it he has begun to embrace it.  This has lead him down a path he used to condemn Gordon for.  Look for this to be the Captain’s downfall.  He will either realize it and walk away from the force or, more than likely, he will get so deep in his self-righteous rage that he will be lost and become a villain to Gordon and the GCPD.  I predict that Harvey and Bullock will eventually have to bring him down…for good.

Cobblepot and Nygma –Isabella and Nygma continue to grow in their relationship.  Isabella is leaving for a librarian’s conference and they exchange nauseating, lovey-dovey compliments to one another.  Nygma eventually has a panic attack because Isabella dons a pair of glasses looking exactly like Kringle’s!  He is haunted by Kringle / his conscience. Nygma tries to talk to Cobblepot about his situation, asking for advice. Cobblepot obviously leads him to the conclusion that he should break up with Isabella before he eventually hurts her like he did Kringle.  Nygma then asks Cobblepot to break up with her for him because he cannot.  Cobblepot gladly accepts.  He tells Isabella that it is over between them.  She refuses to let him go.  She reveals that she can tell Cobblepot loves Nygma as well, and that she refuses to let him go.  Cobblepot calls her a, “…little idiot”, which was pretty hilarious. In a deranged attempt to make Nygma stay with her, Isabella dresses exactly like Kringle.  She even puts his hands around her neck to make him face his fears and see that he won’t actually hurt her. Cobblepot learns of Isabella’s interaction with Nygma and follows with having one of his men cut her break line!  While she is driving, her breaks give out and she is hit by a train!  Cobblepot states that Nygma will be heart broken, and he will have a shoulder to cry on. Predictions – Called it.  Cobblepot couldn’t intimidate Isabella, so he had her killed!  Is she actually dead?  I’m not sure.  The way the camera panned away prior to the training hitting makes me think she may not be dead.  Either way, look for this to put a huge strain on Cobblepot and Nygma’s relationship.  There will be a calm before the storm as Cobblepot will be there to support Nygma, but I think Nygma will eventually find out Cobblepot was behind Isabella’s demise.

Gordon – Gordon returns to the GCPD and is immediately thrown back into action.  Gordon and Bullock go to investigate a murder scene and it turns out to be the man that Barnes encountered!  That man is decapitated, body hanging from a chain, and his blood is covering the wall.  Barnes has truly turned in to the person he always hated!  Gordon and Bullock leave to tell the Captain. Predictions – This was a bridging episode for Gordon.  Look for his dysfunctional relationships to begin being a focal point.  Mario, Lee, Barbara (eventually Vale) will begin to make Gordon’s life more complicated than it already is.  He is currently in high spirits after rejoining the GCPD, but this high will come crashing down as he will not only have to deal with Captain Barnes’ transformation, but his relationship with Lee, Mario, Vale, and Barbara will begin to become much more complicated.   Lee and Mario – Carmine Falcone is throwing Lee and Mario an enormous engagement party.  Lee tells Mario that Gordon has officially rejoined the GCPD, much to Mario’s dismay.  Carmine returns to the show during the engagement party.  Barbara shows up to the party as someone’s date!  She has an interesting conversation with Lee about missing being close to the crazy life of Jim Gordon.  While at the party, Carmine Falcone speaks with Captain Barnes.  Ironically, Barnes tells Falcone that he isn’t above the law and that no one is.  Falcone says that when men speak in such a way, they are usually trying to convince themselves rather than others. Gordon and Bullock arrive at the party to arrest the plastic surgeon who has been behind scalping people’s faces off, when Mario asks to speak to Gordon alone.  They have a heated conversation where Gordon tells him to drop the jealousy.  Mario answers by punching Gordon in the face! Gordon states that he will let that one slide in honor of Lee. Predictions – Look for this situation to heat up.  Mario clearly will not budge on his feelings towards Gordon.  Even though he at times seems level-headed, Gordon seems to be his breaking point, which could be seen with not only when he punched Gordon, but his tone towards him in their private conversation as well.  I would also look for Carmine to start having more of a subtle, reoccurring role.  Mario has spent time distancing himself from his father, but I wouldn’t be surprised to begin seeing more of the Falcone family traits arise, especially with Gordon and Lee both being back at the GCPD.   What did you think of Gotham: "Blood Rush"?  Do you agree with my predictions?  What are your thoughts?  Leave your thoughts in the usual spot, and thanks for reading!
