Gotham Season 5 Promo Gives Us A Glimpse Of Batman

Well, this is happening. Gotham has been around for more than four solid seasons, and in spite of its growing pains and its constant struggle to truly find itself, it has garnered a loyal fan base. To me, this always felt like a doomed project — one that would rely very quickly on the ascension of the Batman and not so much on Jim Gordon. I wasn’t really wrong on that front, but I was wrong in thinking that the very idea was a bad one.

To me, there seemed to be a lot of territory worth exploring in a more grounded Gotham before the clown car shows up and before Bruce Wayne takes on the cowl as Batman. However, Gotham has gone on to truly embrace its rogues’ gallery, taking the mythos in unexpected directions along the way.

Now, for its final season, it looks like things are finally headed to its inevitable conclusion. By inevitable, of course, I mean the arrival of Batman. In this new teaser for the next episode (which comes on the heels of a major death), we get to see a young Bruce Wayne fighting Selina in a prototype kind of suit (minus any mask), but the real treat is right before the logo flashes, where we see the silhouette of the familiar Batman cowl in the smoke.

But what is the context for this? Will this be a young Bruce Wayne actually suiting up for the first time, or do you expect this to be more of a flashforward? We’ll have to wait and see how things pan out, but it is intriguing nonetheless, and even though I wasn’t always the biggest Gotham fan, it has taken us into interesting directions as time has gone on.
