It seems so long ago that we were introduced to Ryan Reynolds version of Green Lantern that was supposed to usher in a DC Cinematic Universe. Plans were quickly changed after the response of that film and WB quickly pivoted to dismantle what plans they had originally planned. Say what you will about the direction but it seems that Warner Bros. has a better idea of direction for the DC mantle and it looks promising that we will get a Green Lantern series for HBO Max.
There is not much we know about the series except that the creatives behind the show have big aspirations, with executive producer Marc Guggenheim saying he is approaching it with the “production ambitions of a movie.” According to The Direct, they have exclusively learned of new pieces of information about the upcoming Green Lantern HBO Max series.
They are claiming the series is being developed for a TV-MA (Mature Audiences) rating, which will likely be due to profanity and violence throughout the show.
The Green Lantern series will also see “Bree Jarta” and Guy Gardner partnering up in 1984. During this time period, they will be facing off against the Dominators, also known as the Dominion.
Bree Jarta will possess the power of super-hearing due to her alien heritage. The series will also delve into more social issues, as Jarta will experience racism during her time on Earth.

While this is interesting news, it is not shocking that this series will be developed for mature audiences. Most of the original content on HBO Max is intended for a maturer audience so it would make sense to see a Green Lantern series be for an adult audience. While most of the DC properties range around a PG-13 rating they also were set for theatrical releases which needs to be available for a wider audience to make its largest box office possible. Netflix has shown that streaming services do not need to follow that model to be profitable.
The limited series Watchmen is a perfect model for the Green Lantern series to follow. On top of being primed for dealing with diversity the Green Lantern Corp will also focus on policing issues. Only time will tell what issues the Green Lantern Corp will deal with and who the villains will be.
