Guardians 3 Sets Are Too Big For The Volume Says Director James Gunn

The Guardians 3 sets are too big for The Volume. Director James Gunn was asked by fans whether he was going to use the new The Volume technology for making Vol. 3? However as Gunn explained, the technology doesn’t quite work for sets as big as he has planned for the threequel. Though, He does think that will change in the future. Gunn also says the sets for Guardians 3 are bigger than those for his most recent movie The Suicide Squad.

There’s no doubt that The Volume technology is fantastic. However we have to remember it also comes with it’s limitations also. For a start, a lot of work has to happen up from to get the backgrounds right for use with The Volume. It’s far harder to adjust on the go during filming, or wat to see how it all looks on the day. However, where The Volume normally does shine right now is other worldly locals. Give the nature of the Guardians movies, we can definitely expect a lot of alien landscapes.

I guess this can also come down to preference of a filmmaker, or the needs of a particular project. We know the majority of upcoming Star Wars shows are being shot using The Volume. However the decision was made to shoot Andor in a more traditional way. Until we see Andor on our screens it’s hard to compare whether that will be a benefit or a hindrance. Once thing we do know is that The Volume, does reduce a budget. It’s much easier to send a small crew to a far off landscape to film some establishing panorama’s than it is to ship an entire film crew and cast somewhere off the grid for a couple of days of shooting.

This is still early days for the tech though. Who knows, perhaps one day there could be Volume screens surrounding a stage as big as those in Pinewood? At that point it could be the perfect combination of huge sets and dynamic backgrounds to help the actors.

What do you think about James Gunn’s comments that Guardians 3 sets are too big for The Volume? Are you a fan of the new technology, or not, and why? Thoughts below as always.
