The Guardians Holiday Special will introduce one of Marvel’s greatest characters in the humble opinion of James Gunn. Director Gunn made the statement on social media, and this has got fans speculating on who Gunn may be referring to? Is it Adam Warlock, who was teased at the end of Guardians 2? Could it be Nova who has a connection to the Guardians through Xandar? Whilst either are possibilities, neither are my pick.

I have a feeling Gunn may be talking about Santa Clause! You see Santa is actually a character within the Marvel comic books. Santa is a mythical being not unlike Thor, that means anyone can tell a Santa Clause story, if not what would happen to the Xmas movie industry? Well, Marvel added in Santa Clause and made him a powerful Mutant in the comics. Given that the Guardians are normally dealing with more cosmic threats, we don’t know why they’d be back on Earth? However given this is the MCU, not the comics, the origin and nature of Santa can be whatever Gunn decides. This is a Xmas Holiday Special after all.

Hey, maybe I am wrong, it is just a guess. I just think the identity being Santa would be kinda fun and explain why Gunn is hyping it on social media at such an early stage. It’s not as if versions of Santa that could work in the MCU have never been tried before. Futurama famously had a killer robot version of Santa, which attacked people at Xmas. I’d guess that Adam Warlock, if coming, would be Guardians 3 rather than the Holiday Special, but who knows? As for Nova, Kevin Feige himself has said there are plans afoot, but we just don’t know how far out those really are yet?
I’m going for Santa, change my mind below.
