Last night, we got a look at the brand spankin’ new trailer for James Gunn’ and Marvel Studios’ new film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first film ended up being one of the big surprises coming out of 2014. Given how relatively obscure the property was to most mainstream audiences, it was the first real test of Marvel’s storytelling prowess. Would they be able to create enough positive buzz around this film to compensate for the fact that nobody knows who in the hell the Guardians of the Galaxy are?

The answer turned out to be a resounding yes, and since then, Marvel Studios has gone and proven with two other films (Ant-Man and Doctor Strange) that the property itself isn’t the only important part of the brand. It’s the quality and mainstream appeal of the film itself (who’d’ve thought, right?).

Fans have eagerly awaited the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, and in that time, we’ve had a couple teasers and a full trailer, both of which did a great job of capturing a similar tone from the first film. In this new trailer, we get a whole lot more of that in addition to a few more plot elements. However, the biggest surprise coming off of this last trailer is how little we truly get regarding the plot. By the end of the clip, we know who the characters are, kind of how their interaction works, but little to nothing regarding what the story is actually about.

I suppose that’s what James Gunn wants most. Guess we’ll have to see the movie in theaters.

The synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is below:

“Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.”
