Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 May Need To Break MCU Canon

The Marvel Cinematic Universe was a great experiment that panned out very well for Marvel Studios. Over the course of the past decade, they’ve proven audience’s affinity for cross-franchise pollination. Of course, with such an ambitious idea like this, it was difficult to make sure that they weren’t inadvertently breaking their own canon. Thus far, they’ve been doing a pretty solid job overall. Sure, there are little inconsistencies here and there (I still have no idea how Thor got to Earth in The Avengers), but there have been few, if any, big contradictions that have made us scratch our heads.

This may change in the near future. Well, sort of.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still in its theatrical run, writer/director James Gunn is already getting started Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Though he may not be that far along in the process just yet, it seems like he may have hit a snag of sorts already. Speaking at E3, Gunn revealed that he just finished a treatment of the flick, but

“I’m writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday. I’m excited about it. I feel really great about it. But there’s one little thing that I had in the first movie. Now, Marvel Canon – MCU – is crazy … I did something in [Guardians of the Galaxy] where it was in the background but it was distinctly there, and people know that it’s there … I have a really good storytelling reason for breaking the canon, and I stayed up last night figuring out if I’m gonna do it or not. I still don’t know.”

If you’ll recall, in the first film, when they’re all doing their lineup, the glass around them was surrounded with all sorts of facts about each of our leads. Our big question is “what specific fact will be retconned for the third film?”

“Thosethings are something that your average viewer doesn’t see at all. But there’s a lot of background I put into those things about who they’ve worked with, where they are from, what’s going on. And it’s one of those things that I’m thinking about changing.”

In case you wanted to speculate, have a look at some of the images below.
