Gunn Considered Guardians 3 Plot As a Groot And Rocket Spin-Off At One Time

James Gunn considered the Guardians 3 plot as a Groot and Rocket spin-off movie at one time reveals the director and now DC boss. Speaking with io9 Gunn talked about how Rocket and his backstory was one of the key elements that he developed to get his head into the first Guardians movie.

“And I thought about, ‘Well, okay, if there was a talking space raccoon, how would he have come to exist?’ And as I mused upon it, I started thinking about how this was the saddest creature in the universe, and that was actually the seed to me for the entire Guardians trilogy. That was my way into it, this underpinning of just isolation and sadness, and all of these characters are isolated and sad. So I knew what Rocket’s backstory was from that moment before I had come up with the rest of that stuff for Vol. 1. It was the first thing I came up with.”

Gunn then went on to explain why to begin with the idea to have this story play out as a spin-off seemed like a good idea.

“I always thought it was a third movie thing because I thought we had to tell Peter Quill’s story first and then get into Rocket’s story,” Gunn said. “I think the only question was, was it going to be a Rocket and Groot movie or was it going to be Guardians 3—because initially, I was going to  do it as Rocket and Groot.”

I’d be up for a Rocket and Groot movie now (if both survive). However, I also think its right that Gunn gets to end this trilogy with what is being called the final film for this particular Guardians team. Whoever does take over this franchise with a new team has some big boots to fill for sure.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in the US this Friday 5th May. However, it released today in the U.K., therefore I am thinking about when I can go this weekend to see it. Manny should have a review up this week, perhaps one from Fox as well if both got to see it early as press. I will however pain everyone with a third review myself once I get to see it. Editor’s privilege.

What do you think of his comments as James Gunn considered the Guardians 3 plot as a Groot and Rocket spin-off movie. Would you have liked to see that idea, or is it better to keep the family together for this trilogy capper? As always, let us know below.
