Lin-Manuel Miranda is proving to be on of the hottest musical commodities in Hollywood right now. Not only is he hot off the success of the Broadway musical HAMILTON, but he has already finished writing music for Disney’s latest animated film, MOANA, and is slated to join Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in an upcoming MARY POPPINS sequel. Now, you can add another Disney credit to the man’s filmography.
Deadline is now reporting that Miranda will be joining forces with iconic songwriter Alan Menken (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALADDIN, TANGLED) to write the music for an upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson story THE LITTLE MERMAID. The pair will be writing the music together, which is especially notable since Menken was one of the songwriters on the original 1989 animated film.
Miranda and Marc Platt will serve as producers on the picture. Miranda will help to supervise the story, but will not serve as screenwriter. The actual level of Miranda’s involvement in the production as a whole remains to be seen, but giving his increasingly-prevalent relationship with Disney, one can imagine it will be pretty involved, barring any real creative differences. But considering he’s already worked with the media giant on MOANA, he seems like the kind of man who collaborates well with others.
THE LITTLE MERMAID will mark the next of countless live-action adaptations Disney has been making over the past few years — and will continue to make for the foreseeable future.
