Hang On — A New Nintendo Switch Console Could Have TWO Screens?

Could a new Nintendo Switch have two screens?

Does anyone have a calendar nearby? I feel like I’ve taken a trip back to 2004. It was a simpler time. A time when we could go to the movies and check out movies like Million Dollar Baby and The Incredibles. But, in addition to that, we could go to our local GameStop and pick up a Nintendo DS — a console that sported two screens. It spawned many different versions of itself and finally the 3DS before being phased out in favor of the Nintendo Switch. With the Switch absolutely killing it, I thought we’d moved on past two screens. We may not have.

Self-proclaimed “vulnerability researcher” Mike Heskin has apparently found some interesting stuff when he dug into the firmware update. But what kind of information, you may ask? Well, here’s what he had to say.

“Firmware 10.0.0 adds preliminary support for a new hardware model: ‘nx-abcd,’” Heskin tweeted. “3 of the 5 new DRAM profiles are for this new hardware type and there’s evidence of a secondary display of sorts being added exclusively on this model.”

So there are two things to zero in on. First is the “preliminary support for a new hardware model.” This mean that the long-awaited Nintendo Switch Pro that’s been rumored for decades could finally be surfacing. Furthermore, with there being “evidence of a secondary display of sorts,” we could be getting another DS-like screen.

Of course, it’s hard to say exactly what’s going to happen at this point. Nintendo is notoriously difficult to predict and whenever we think they’re going to zig they tend to zag. Considering I thought the Wii U was the last time they’d dare tamper with two screens, I’m actually a bit surprised. But given their history, I guess I shouldn’t really be surprised at all by this surprising potential turn of events.

Am I happy about the idea of two screens? Not in the slightest. In fact, I really dislike using two screens and only remember the DS and 3DS being unwieldy to hold. I also disliked having to switch from a big screen to a tiny one on the Wii U. But, Nintendo’s gonna Nintendo. I only hope that this firmware smoking gun is indicative of something different from a second screen…but we’ll see.
