HBO Confirms Game Of Thrones Reunion – But You Won’t Be Able To Watch It On HBO

It’s been rumored for some time that HBO was gathering the large ensemble cast of the epic Game of Thrones TV show together for a reunion. Various stars were spotted in Belfast that really had no business being there….as their characters are long dead. It’ something that’s been done before, most notably with the Sopranos.

Now, HBO has indeed confirmed they are shooting a Game of Thrones reunion special and this will be hosted by Conan O’Brien as per the report by EW. We have no idea on exactly which cast members were present for this reunion, we can assume Jason Momoa’s presence since we know he arrived in Belfast, one would assume Sean Bean etc, but really we are just assuming the reunion members at this point.

What is interesting is how this reunion is being marketed, one would think it would appear after the final episode of Season 8, or the following week on HBO, but no. This reunion special will only appear on the home released full  Season 1-8 boxset. So Blu-ray or DVD will be your only way to see this until someone inevitably posts it somewhere online illegally (I give it 3 days).

I am not a fan of HBO’s home release policy for Game of Thrones so far. Each year they release a season on its own along with an all seasons so far box set. To me this is pretty poor, do they expect fans to keep buying the same season over and over again? Of course, I suppose it’s up to the buyer, they don’t have to purchase the box set and can instead just buy every single season as it releases. It seems a little cynical to me and would have preferred to see something that encouraged you to buy each standalone series to make up a nice box set at the end.

Personally, though I am a huge fan of the show, I have been waiting for the super duper 1-8 boxset to release before purchasing these shows to keep forever. I currently have every single episode that’s ever aired saved up on my DVR and have watched them through 2-3 times already. But I would like to own that final complete boxset and I suppose the reunion will be a nice little extra for that.

At least I’ll finally be able to loan my mother the series to watch, as she enjoyed the books but doesn’t have the chance to get the channel Game of Thrones is shown on in the UK (we don’t have HBO).

Are you interested at all in the cast reunion, would it make you go out and buy the box set? Share your thoughts in the usual place below.
