HBO Max To Launch With $15/Month Price Tag — Why So Much?

This year will see the Streaming Wars begin. The launch of Disney+ and Apple TV+ ensures that. But that’s not to say they’ll be the only new competitors. Next year will bring a few other heavyweights, including the likes of NBCUniversal’s Peacock and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max. The latter of which is looking to come with quite the hefty price tag.

We’ve known this for quite some time, but speculation was put to rest when HBO Max announced the official price of $14.99 a month, with an intent to launch in May 2020. This is quite the step up from services like Disney+ and Apple TV+, which boast a $6.99 a month and $4.99 a month price tag. While it is a lot more expensive, it’s worth mentioning that HBO subscribers will receive the service for free. Additionally, if you’re already an HBO Now subscriber like me, it’s essentially a free gift.

“Twice the content for the same price? I’ve had much more difficult marketing propositions to sell in the market than that,” AT&T’s WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey said to CNBC. “I have a great deal of confidence that there is probably people who look at that and say there’s enough in there for me that I probably want to get into that.”

Additionally, he said that this isn’t the same content as that being offered by Disney, Netflix, or Apple, and that there is some “pretty impressive and unique content in [HBO Max].”

The announcement of House of the Dragon is certainly a bit deal, but there is also the addition of series like The Big Bang Theory and South Park, the latter of which just closed a $500 million deal. Additionally, there are plenty of DC projects in the works from Greg Berlanti, including Strange Adventures and Green Lantern.

And most of that’s not even mentioning HBO’s standard content. So, yeah, it’s a lot, but Stankey would argue that you’re getting a lot. But, in the age of the streaming wars…is it enough?

“At $15 a month or higher, HBO Max risks being overpriced for anyone other than existing subscribers,” analyst Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson told the NY Post. “With Disney priced at $6.99, there’s a risk they will miss the market.”
