HBO. The home of quality TV. The place to go for those nice, shiny, prestigious stories that snobs everywhere love to tout as some of the greatest in the industry. Among the main cable networks, they reign supreme as the one who sets the high bar everyone else does their best to reach. Of course, every so often, as the next season of shows hit, they throw out trailers that show off their coming attractions, and 2019 looks to be a doozy for us fans.
Among the many pieces of content, they have the Deadwood film, a new series called Euphoria (starring Zendaya), and Chernobyl, among countless others. One series this writer, in particular, is His Dark Materials, which is based on the novel trilogy of the same name from British author Philip Pullman. The trilogy was the basis of the 2007 film The Golden Compass, and while all parties went into that movie with the best intentions, studio meddling couldn’t save it from being a box office disappointment. Hopefully, this series will allow it to actually lean into what makes it a unique tale.

However, one look that is sure to please many fans is the glimpse we get of the Watchmen series. If you’ve been following its production, you’ll know it’s a modern-set show that takes place decades following the conclusion of the graphic novel, meaning we’d get to see a post-Squid-attacked world. However, that’s not to say we won’t be seeing some familiar visual motifs. As is shown off in the trailer, we’ll be getting a new take on the vigilante Rorschach, whose original version was killed off. I’ll certainly be interested to see how it all plays out and connects to the story we know and love.
