HBO’s Watchmen TV Show Will Be Set In Modern Times

I might just be a little bit more excited by HBO’s upcoming Watchmen TV Series now. In a letter shared with fans on Instagram, the man tasked with redefining Watchmen for TV, writer Damon Lindelof, has changed some expectations.

Most fans probably assumed Watchmen would be an adaptation of the classic graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. After all, that’s exactly what we got in Zack Snyder’s movie adaptation. For those unaware, Watchmen was set in the 80’s during the height of the Cold War, and The US had won the Vietnam War.

However it is clear from Lindelof’s letter to fans that this show will use the source materials themes to construct something completely new and set in modern times. Here is Lindelof’s Instagram post.

Now I understand there’s going to be some divisiveness in fans. There are many I am sure will hate the idea of this modern re-imagining of their beloved graphic novel. However I am sure there are also some who would prefer something brand new which doesn’t take liberties with the source in the same way a straight up adaptation might do.

Personally I’m intrigued enough to check it out, my only worry is whenever Damon Lindelof is mentioned I fear the story will have no end. If for once he actually plans out a middle and an end, then this could be something worth watching.
