Hellboy Pulled From Theaters, Wont Recoup Production Cost

Over the weekend, during a convention in London the star of the reboot Hellboy, David Harbour, had given his opinions about why he thought the film did poorly. We can put that in past-tense now as Lionsgate has officially pulled Hellboy from theaters after a five week domestic run. So how did it do?

Well as you can imagine, not very well. According to The Numbers, the Hellboy reboot made a little under $22 million at the domestic box office and a little over $18 million in all foreign markets for a total of about $40 million. This is really bad news as the film had a reported budget of $50 million, meaning that the film will not be able to recoup it’s cost of production.

The Hellboy reboot was directed by Neil Marshall from a script that was co-written by Hellboy’s creator Mike Mignola, Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden. Along with Harbour it starred Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell and Daniel Dae Kim.

Here is the synopsis for Hellboy:
Hellboy is back, and he’s on fire. He is called to the English countryside to battle a trio of rampaging giants. There he discovers The Blood Queen, Nimue, a resurrected ancient sorceress thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Suddenly caught in a clash between the supernatural and the human, Hellboy is now hell-bent on stopping Nimue without triggering the end of the world.

This still puzzles me as we know that the director for Hellboy and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army Guillermo del Toro wanted to do a third film, along with star of both mentioned films Ron Perlman. It’s a real shame as I really would have loved to have seen what they had planned for a third film.
