Late Friday, long after I had switched off for the evening we found out Henry Cavill is the Highlander. Specifically, Cavill has been cast in the upcoming Highlander reboot from director Chad Stahelski. The information was reported initially be Deadline. However soon afterwards, Cavill himself took to Instagram to confirm his new role. In the initial report Deadline only said Cavill was in talks and that his role was unknown. However I think you’ll agree with me from Cavill’s post it makes it sound like he is playing the title character of the Highlander.
“Very exciting news today! I’ve been a fan of Highlander since I was lad. From the movies in all of their 80s, Queen slathered glory to the TV show with an actor who looked remarkably like one of my brothers.
Being not shy with swords, and having a director as talented as Chad Stahelski at the helm, this is an opportunity like no other. Deep diving into franchise storytelling with all the tools at our disposal, is going to make this an adventure I (and hopefully all of you) shall never forget.
And as you can see from the swipe, I’ve lately been dipping into some of my Scottish heritage, and inadvertently getting my base line research underway!”

I don’t think there would be any need for Cavill to explore his Scottish heritage if he was not, you know, playing the Highlander. A Highlander outside of the movies simply was an old way of saying Scotsman, like myself. However, since Cavill himself is English, it will be interesting to see if he can pull off the accent? Though, perhaps it does not matter seen as original star Christopher Lambert couldn’t do it?

Cavill as he says is not shy of swords and sorcery as the star of Netflix’s The Witcher series. I guess all that training will come in handy to play a sword fighter again in the Highlander. Fans are already speculating about whether Cavill will be playing Connor McLeod, Duncan McLeod or a completely new character? Being a reboot, not supposed to connect to the original movies and shows, thankfully, I’m guessing simply Connor. If you had asked me a couple years ago, I would not have chosen Cavill, but he won me over in The Witcher. Right now I can’t wait to see if the team can tap the unrealized potential of this franchise with mega star Cavill in the leads role.
