UPDATE: is reporting that the Russo Brothers, who were in consideration to direct the live-action Hercules film, are attached as producers. Additionally, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe Dave Callaham, is attached to write. There is currently no director attached. It is also unclear if the film will be a musical, but there will likely be plenty of action.
ORIGINAL STORY:
A Hercules live-action film is now in the works with some solid talent in mind.
The Disney live-action train keeps on rolling. The world may be going topsy-turvy right now, but you know Disney is all about providing that comfort food. For the past several years, they’ve fully capitalized on their animated properties. From Beauty and the Beast to The Lion King, these live-action movies have enchanted millions around the world. Sure, critics may not have loved all of them, but they have the billions of dollars in revenue to prove it.
So, it’s no surprise that we’re hearing word from Disinsider that a Hercules flick is in the works. Not only that, the film is expected to feature songs from the original movie, with new ones likely being added. At this point, that’s par for the course for these adaptations, so that’s not a big surprise. The plan is to release this film theatrically.
What is a big surprise are the names that are on the list of potential directors. First up, we have Jon Favreau. Known for Iron Man, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and The Mandalorian, it’d be no surprise if he hopped on board another Disney live-action project. Admittedly, this isn’t the most exciting choice. While I love Jon Favreau, I wasn’t a huge fan with The Lion King. and worry that Favreau is too caught up in pushing technology to focus on telling a unique story.

The next name (or names) is more interesting. The Russo Brothers were also mentioned to the outlet about a year ago. After creating gems like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, I’d be interested in anything of theirs. They’ve been busy working on more personal projects, but I’d love to see them come back for a Disney live-action movie. At the very least, I trust their story instincts a bit more than Favreau. They seem better at taking the essence of what works rather than transliterating it for another medium.
The final name they heard was Gore Verbinski. He was the man behind the first three Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as well as animated film Rango. I’m the least enthused about this name, but it’s just as well. As it turns out, the outlet is the least confident about his involvement.
Keep in mind that none of these directors are in talks. They aren’t even officially being looked into. From the sound of it, they are just names being tossed around at this early stage. The outlet expects that they will soon be meeting writers, directors, and talent via Zoom.
What do you think about this turn of events? Is Hercules a good movie to adapt to live-action? What director would you like to see take on the property? Let us know your thoughts down below!
