How did Mulan perform?
I don’t think any of us are surprised that Mulan seemingly underperformed. After all, it was only a few weeks after the film’s release on Disney+ that Black Widow was pushed back in theaters. Had Mulan done very well, you would think Disney would have pushed for the Marvel Studios flick to get pushed to Disney+ in the midst of the pandemic. Sadly, that isn’t the case. As of yesterday, we know that no Marvel Studios film will premiere on Disney+.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean Mulan flopped, right? It’s possible it just didn’t do the numbers Disney thinks a Marvel Studios deserves. Well, there was recently some data gathered this past weekend that initially seemed to paint the first 12 days of Mulan’s release as a positive. According to Yahoo!, 9 million users had streamed the film in that time period, translating into $261 million. Given that they basically get to keep all that money, it seems like a big success, right?

However, the data itself came from 7Park Data and was apparently misinterpreted by the outlet. According to the firm’s co-founder, the actual grosses were probably closer to $60 million and $90 million. I wouldn’t call it a flop, but Mulan was an expensive film, so it needed to perform better. With $200 million to recoup (not even counting advertising and the money wasted on early year promos), this is quite a disappointing haul. And that’s not even mentioning the controversy, lukewarm reviews (which could lead to declining viewership, and disappointing reception in China.
It was an experiment worth testing, and in this writer’s opinion, Black Widow would have been the more perfect film to test it on. It’s a part of a beloved franchise and is likely not to offend anyone. However, who knows if they’ll test Disney+ on another film like that again. Based on everything we’re seeing, they’re really planning on hoarding their movies until the pandemic subsides.
